Dolomite Powder

Dolomite, also referred to as “Calcium Magnesium Carbonate,” is a double carbonate composed of CaCO3 and MgCO3. It is commonly found in deposits of sedimentary rock known as dolostone. Dolomite extracted from these deposits typically has low silica content, high brightness, and superior purity, making it highly suitable for applications in the coating industry.

Dolomite closely resembles the mineral calcite, which consists of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). In contrast, dolomite is a calcium magnesium carbonate (CaMg(CO3)2). These minerals can be differentiated by their hardness and reaction to acids. Calcite has a hardness of 3, whereas dolomite is slightly harder, ranging from 3.5 to 4. Additionally, calcite exhibits a strong reaction with cold hydrochloric acid, while dolomite produces only a weak effervescence in the same conditions. However, powdered dolomite reacts more strongly with warm or dilute hydrochloric acid.

Dolomite is believed to form through the replacement of calcium in limestone deposits with magnesium during lithification. This process converts layers of shells and skeletal remains of marine organisms into crystallized calcite or calcium carbonate, resulting in the formation of dolomite as a true double salt (CaMg(CO3)2).

Compared to calcite or limestone, dolomite is harder, denser, more chemically stable, and more resistant to acid attack. Its weak reaction to cold, dilute hydrochloric acid becomes more pronounced when the mineral is powdered or the acid is warmed. These properties make dolomite an essential mineral in everyday applications.

Our range of dolomite powder is widely used in industries such as paints, plastic compounds, and plastic processing. It also serves as a critical raw material in sectors like iron and steel, ferro-alloys, glass, and alloy steels.
